About Me
- Jo
- Wine Country, Ca, United States
- By day I am a Business owner, Mother and wife, house cleaner, taxi driver and laundress, obtaining physical health through raw food nutrition; this being my personal challenge. Actually I love cooking and learning new things, I am an on & off raw Foodist to help me with my Systemic Lupus; however I do eat raw fish and sometimes raw dairy. I guess I would consider myself a "raw pescatarian" aside from the occasional raw goats milk / cheese once in a blue moon.

ok so I didn't think this would send like this from my cell, but whatever. THIS is the BOMB Sushi style veggie roll.... Once upon a time I saw this recipe for "rice" with... ew... Cauliflower! Thought it was really odd! I couldn't imagine it ever being good, so I never tried it until now. I had all the ingredients for a roll, and I winged the few ingredients (cauliflower, salt, pepper, olive oil and some toasted sesame oil- not raw but so what) and it turned out REALLY GOOD! I just spread it on some nori sheets and filled it with tomato, avocado, carrot, and stuffed some spring greens in there for good measure. ha. Killer!! Love it and will definitely make it again! Keep in mind the mixture should be used asap and toss the leftovers- it does not keep well and will turn a nasty smell in your fridge if you store it longer than a day! The website where you can get some raw food items like Nori sheets and Soy sauce are www.rawfood.com
I'm doing super well, threw on a pair of tight jeans today that aren't tight anymore, still abound with energy and focus and clarity and I'm ready for more!

Saturday
Still doing amazingly well, I feel fantastic, my breathing is clear, and my energy level is *PERFECT*. I know by experience I'm gonna have a sucky day sometime, whether it be due to lack of something in my diet or whatever else. Anyways, so far so great!
Tony bought me an Ipod touch yesterday, and I'm STOKED- It can do everything an iphone does except it's not a phone. I still have yet to find a blogger app, but I can do it over the internet on the ipod anyway. I found a raw food app as well, can't wait to dive in!
I've received my shipment of food from www.rawfood.com and I tried most things already; One of four raw granola type cereals, the green superfood powder (for smoothies), raw nuts (much better than storebought) and a couple things I've bought before; Cacao powder and Goji berries. I'll post the pic later and share some of the beneficials of the items, cuz I'm sure you're dying to know. Just kidding. It's actually helpful for me to write stuff like that down tho, for memory retention. But omg.. there's so much to learn.
Off I go to work, and to Traders for fruits and stuff.

Three days
I've been raw three days now. I don't know why it's seemed so simple actually. Usually it's stressful. I'm sure something will come up. Ha.
Today I truly felt like my brain was / is clear- It's funny, I've felt this exact same thing every time I've been raw, not sure when it hits me that I'm not in a fog (which of course you never realize til it's cleared) but it's typically for me early on. Other people who go raw for a first time usually get headaches and stuff, but hey, if you go raw a hundred percent right off the bat, you're probably gonna throw your body for a loop! Yikes. Even going off drugs throws the body off, so it's not so much like something BAD is happening- It's just a process.
Anyway, I ate overnight-soaked oats (thanks, Nature's First Touch in Templeton! http://www.ntnah.com/
Drained, added blueberries & raspberries, and some almond milk. It was simply very good!
Lunch was a package of raw crackers I bought at the health food store, I was picking at them while going through everything else I got at the store, and dang they're addictive. One odd thing I got there, is raw cow's milk. Hmm I'm not totally sure if that will work for me, but what the hay, it's just a quart. Typically I'm finding issues with allergies of dairy, but just SOME dairy; not all. I'm curious if raw makes any difference at all. They say the homoginization and pasturization process wreaks havoc on the human body. Most will poo-poo the idea but others, which I've read, give a scientific breakdown which really is an eye opener. I won't bother to share here; that's not my purpose. So later, I ate the NRG soup that I've made several times in the past, had that for lunch yesterday and then had the rest tonite with a dinner of greens and my yummy poppyseed dressing. I'm full, I'm happy, I feel great! Last time I went raw I was like STARVING for meat or bread or something. I'm not this time, not so far anyway. I did have some raw fish yesterday and today, maybe that's why.
I got online and purchased from www.rawfood.com some raw organic chocolate, dried greens for smoothies (hope it's good!) and quite a few other food items. I'll share those later when they arrive.
Time for bed!

I'm back again. Sheesh!
Well look who's around the neighborhood AGAIN. As I sit here with my floofy salad in front of the computer, I realize I'm probably gonna say the same damn stuff I said before: I gotta go raw again, it's been so long, this is why, bla bla bla, Who the hell cares.
Oh and sorry if you don't like my occasional cursing on here. It's how I roll sometimes, especially here. If you don't like it, you can take a hike. :-)
So today, I was driving and the thought hit me that I need to go raw. Now keep in mind that I've thought that a bajillion times before, but this time I am about to hit a wall health-wise. How can it be good for you to continue to have health issues, some minor and seemingly fixable (did I mention the allergy I have to God only knows which affects my nasal passages or whatever) I'm not going into that one any more so don't ask. So anyway, HOW LONG can your body just continue to DEAL and DEAL and DEAL and DEAL with issues before it just gets exhausted with "fixing" or "dealing" or "trying" (as our bodies do; they are constantly in repair mode but never catch up) and that is the moment of realization that we have GOT to throw our bodies a freaking bone! GAH. We eat such crap, most people not realizing so- and I just like the idea of giving mine a chance to "reboot" if you will. When I went raw for the first time way back when I got Lupus, I swear it was what my body needed (one year I was sucessfully 100% raw) to, if you will, breathe in and take in fresh clean pure everything. It's like I took the strain of dealing with the daily crap I put in my body (and mind you, i was a "healthy eater" in today's terms) off my body's shoulders and it became new again.... I never had those kinds of lupus issues again, not like when I was first diagnosed. I feel things now and again, and it's typically when I am not eating as "clean" as I was.
OK I'm talking too much.
Today I did pretty well, I suppose 75% raw. I read today that we shouldn't eat raw food and cooked food together, as it apparently creates too much acid in the stomach. Have all raw in the morning (fruit is perfect- natural sugar jolt) and anything raw in the afternoon, and if you want cooked, make it an evening meal. Hmm. somehow makes sense to me. But what if I want a salad with my cooked stuff? No matter to me cuz i'd rather be all raw, but I'll keep it in mind anyway.
Today I had my good 'ol Almond milk (made it last night, yay!) blended with half a banana, big 'ol handful of baby spinach leaves, a handful of blueberries (frozen might be a great idea to keep the drink cold- maybe bananas too?) and, humm... is that it? Jeez. usually I put raw chocolate in there. How on earth did I space on the chocolate? How funny. Anyway, it made two drinks and I downed 'em both and went to work.
Later at work I was playing with raw stuff and invented a taco of sorts; (are you still reading all this? You guys are nuts) So the taco shell was a Romaine leaf, and inside I put some of our Ahi Poki (ahi diced, chives diced, salt, olive oil and toasted sesame oil) and some onions, cilantro, fresh salsa, I should have put Avocado! oh yum. It was good. Not like OMG fantastic but it hit the spot and was tasty and refreshing. I'd recommend it fo sho!
So now here I sit, happy I did fairly well today and am eating a salad with random stuff (I am finding that fun for some reason- The lovely "Kitchen sink salad" doesn't that just sound charming. So to top it off, I found some time ago a raw POPPYSEED DRESSING that I was excited to make- and dang if it's not frickin GOOD! CHEA! Nice! Here's how to make it; it's SUPER easy.
TOSS IN THE BLENDER:
1/2 cup pine nuts
1/4 cup flax seed oil or olive oil
1/2 cup water
juice of one lemon wedge
2 T agave or a good squirt according to sweet preferences
Salt
2T poppyseeds-ADD LAST or you'll have gray dressing LOL
Amend this according to your taste; Adding less liquid at first will allow you to custom make the thickness for your liking. Taste and adjust! YUM!

Ugly but Beautiful NRG soup
Looks awful but tastes really beautiful and refreshing. N R G soup from Juliano.
1 recipe of water (juiced tomato, cucumber and lemon- but i used a lime)
1 Tbsp minced garlic
1/2 tablespoon ginger
1/2 tablespoon hot pepper (start to blend these so far)
1 c diced tomato
1 c mint
1/2 c onion
1/2 c red pepper (i used orange pepper)
1/2 c corn off the cob
1/3 c nama shoyu (oops! I forgt mine!)
1 apple, skinned & chopped
2 c fresh OJ
I eyeballed everything (typical me).I used a green chili pepper (nice kick) and used about 1/2 c loose packed mint, an entire corn off cob, oopsie daisy on the nama shoyu, and about 1 cup of OJ. Yum! I'd make it again despite how ugly it looks!

Real Live Breakfast Oatmeal
I made this today; it's Breakfast Oatmeal, from Juliano's book "Raw";
Soak 1/4 c raisins and about a cup of oats (rolled oats, raw) for about an hour; I put warm water in to help soften; When water is absorbed, drain any excess.
Toss about a cup of fruits of your choice in the blender.
Add the oats. I added blueberries & raspberries and two pitted dates. Blend and eat as is, or pour a bit of nutmilk over the top.
This is interesting to me, as the consistency is so creamy that I'm curious if it could freeze into an ice cream type dessert... it almost made a "gel" which I have a feeling would freeze well if blended even smoother. Ima gonna try it!
Raw Mayonnaise! YUM!
Made some "mayonnaise" today- best yet!! Slathered it on my pizza crust recipe (I'm calling it a taco shell for today) and tossed on a lettuce leaf and a tomato slice just to check it out; and it's great!!& Amazing how a ho-hum taco shell can be transformed with a great ingredient... MAYO! The watery, tasteless avocados might actually work well for this recipe now that I think about it. They are also a lighter green which is more visually appealing.
RAW MAYO (highly recommend doubling recipe for vita-mix blending purposes)
1 avocado
1/3 cup soaked raw cashews
salt and dill to taste
lemon juice to taste and for consistency (add slowly please)

Makeshift Dehydrator
I crack myself up.
So I've always liked the idea of dehydrating in the sun (who the heck wants to turn on the oven when it's blasted hot outside anyways?) but I DON'T care for the idea of buggies snacking on my schtuff. So I'm thinking about what I can use outside, and right in front of my nose is my two-tier wire fruit basket. VOILA! I can take some of my mesh fabric (which I make my nutmilk bags out of ) and grab my 14yr old daughter's sewing machine and whip a cover together. Sweet! And this fabric is SO tight that the tiniest bug wouldnt' be able to get in, yet sunshine and air can still flow through. Only two tiers for the basket tho, but oh well. It's a start.
(I'm already thinking about buying a brand new birdcage- Couldn't it be transformed as well? Possibly would look nice hanging on the deck too. No birds allowed tho. )
So I slice a couple fruits with my slicer on super-thin- Half a carrot and an apple to start. Just for fun. Later I make a "pizza crust" recipe from Juliano's book "Raw" and change it slightly, and below is the results. They are not totally dry yet (it wasn't as hot today as I expected, but still a great day to give it a whirl). they're still pliable (like a soft corn tortilla) but can be made more crisp like pizza crust with more drying.
Ingredients for the "pizza crust" are:
1 c oat groats, soaked (6 hrs)
1 T olive oil
1/2 cup ground flax seeds, add water to bind
1/2 cup ish carrot pulp
1 T honey or agave
Salt
Basil, onion powder garlic powder to taste ( a little goes a long way) or use fresh minced
Shape into flat patties, nice and thin. Great for soft taco or sandwich or pizza crust.
Next time I will put more spices in than I did; I think I was hesitant to over-spice, because if you put too much of something, you can't fix it. Underspice, and you can just sprinkle on more when you eat it! <3

Time to get back on
Time to get back on the raw wagon. My husband said i'm becoming a B. So here i am actually enjoying my cereal of buckwheat and fruit w nutmilk!
Saturday, March 13
Back and forth
Yep.
I need to go raw again.
Do you even know how often I say that? I sound like a broken record to myself...
My knees ache, I am tired and I KNOW I don't eat enough fruits or veggies lately, let alone cooked or raw.
Just sayin'...
Isn't there a way to do this easy / no brainer Raw like method? I bet there is... but more difficult when you've got the regular ol foodies as family members, and I'm the head chef so to speak.
I'll get there. When my body hollers enough, (almost there), then I'll be forced to do it again. I like it when that happens but I wish it didn't take the ... uh, hollering.

almond milk mishap
not so good with one hand... the other one is holding the camera.
This was too funny not to post.
Wednesday, February 17
oops!
I just accidentally soaked an entire bag -16 oz- of almonds and I usually do about a third of the bag.
Anyone want any almond milk? LOL I'm gonna have PLENTY... and lucky me, my husband is installing our Reverse Osmosis system as I type. No more water bottles getting chucked in the recycle bin! YAY!

Holy crap-OLA. UUUGGHHH
I feel ... exhAUSTED. pftwerwersihfsfdnskljfsarjwoiemjateiji
yep.
Obviously I have not stayed Raw or even a FRACTION raw.
gawd....I need a wife.
OK so I'm gonna vent here for a sec.
I'm TIRED but it's funny, you'd never know it when I'm at work because I LOVE being there and I LOVE the customer interaction and the energy and the fun... maybe I also love it there because we have hired help doing the DISHES and cleaning UP AFTER THEMSELVES unlike my CHILDREN AT HOME... sorry. I'll try not to get aggravated anymore. ((LOUD OBVIOUS SIGH))
So ya... I come home at night, tired but happy, and walk in and there's my kids playing Playstation with a pile of dishes in the sink and shoes & backpacks everywhere and plates & dishcloths and drumsticks and batteries and papers and ipods and computers and stuff on the bar and dammit! I still gotta make DINNER at 9pm at night. NICE. My 14yr old girl rolls her eyes and comes up with an urgent excuse (Gotta take a shower! or OH look at the time, it's past my bedtime!) when I ask her to make a salad. (she's long had a PB&J sandwich or whatever for her dinner... Lord knows she can't make anything more involved than that) So out come the excuses, either that or she does a crappy job on the salad so she hopes I don't ask her to do it anymore. (Imagine the greens in the bowl, an OBVIOUS overload of way too many cranberries, whining when she has to chop a few red onions, and EWWW I think the feta cheese is bad. It's FINE honey. Some cheese smells funny. I just bought it yesterday. SEE?? the date is next YEAR. It's fine.)
So, yes, lovely... I'm picking my battles. Unfortunately she wins some of them and hence out comes the "princess" mentality which drives me effing nuts.
OK I just need to go raw again or somewhat because I feel fatigued... my body feels very tired physically, and it "feels" like it wants / needs regular exercise. Of course I plunked a new Jillian Michaels "Kick my ass" DVD in my laptop and guess what? It doesn't work.
That's ok. I follow her on Twitter. She responded to me once, maybe I'll pester her for a personal delivery of a new one. HA. that'll happen. not.
What meal is easiest to stay raw? Maybe breakfast? I dunno. Heck, just grocery shopping is difficult to find the time to do. The Schwann's guy and I are buddies. It sucks.
I need a wife.

Thursday, January 28
Many things have happened and I've had to put more protein in my diet and lay off sugars, even natural sugars. I got a slight imbalance (annoying) and have had to try more homeopathic remedies as I don't like taking drugs. The lady at the homeopathic store said lay off caffeine (OUCH!) and no sugars of any kind- even fruits.
A friend of mine received Christ. My joy has been through the roof because of it. I know some of you may not want to hear about that so I'll leave it be for now. He was almost at suicide and he opened a bible I gave him. Totally transformed his life and he is a new man. AMAZING.
That's all for now-
Jo
A friend of mine received Christ. My joy has been through the roof because of it. I know some of you may not want to hear about that so I'll leave it be for now. He was almost at suicide and he opened a bible I gave him. Totally transformed his life and he is a new man. AMAZING.
That's all for now-

Since going raw, I tend to of course have more stuff in the fridge; and it's getting crowded. I decided to put all "my stuff" in the garage refrigerator since there's much more room in there.
But now it seems the "out of sight, out of mind" thing is happening.
I need to bring it all back in . Ha! Or something.
Last night I cooked a big pot of my mom's Mexican Taco Soup and while I had a serving, I was wondering how my tummy would fare. It didn't fare well. I woke up with heartburn and my intestines were rumbling. Nothing severe, but I knew my stomach wasn't used to the acidity and I was reminded once again the benefits of staying raw. Time to make my raw mexican soup instead!

Been away!
Well, been away from the computer... I guess.
How many days has it been? seems like a week but likely not.
I've missed a beat here and there, but I'm still doing well. Difficult to do regular grocery shopping and meal planning AND still make sure I have enough of my own stuff for food, but it's been SO worth it.
I had a customer come in and bring us some raw treats she made, she didn't know I am doing the raw thing and was shocked when i told her I was too. I made her some almond milk and gave it to her the next day, I can't wait to hear back from her. She buys almond milk from trader joes and I told her she'd love mine... much more fresh and WHITE like milk!
I'be been busy, will maybe not be posting every single day but will do when I try a new recipe or have changes in health or whatever. I've been still waking up tired but I know it's because we've been going to bed late! I fell asleep on my son's lap the other night.. cute ;-)
I think it's time I look for other raw fooders to subscribe to; i need recipes and ideas to keep the healthiness flowing ;-) It's just more "internet time" that I don' t have, but actually it may help me with my goals... and that's always good to have a goal of good health, weather it be physical, mental or spiritual; because then everything else falls in place, right?

feeling good!
I feel GREAT. I'm about 80% raw and it seems almost perfect for me. I feel low stress, my body feels good...more later!
Thursday, January 14
Whew, busy day today!
Did the Chamber Mixer at Pier 46 and everything was a hit!
Feeling great- I'm LOVING this, I'm realizing that my stress level is waaaay better- I feel like I can handle whatever comes my way alot better. I'm not stressing out anymore, even tho the laundry pile is getting bigger and bigger and the fridge keeps getting emptier and emptier and my free time is teensy tiny all the time. OH WELL it's not the end of the world. The laundry and shopping WILL get done.
Today; made my coffee at home with the nutmilk and raw chocolate & honey.
The boys made me breakfast at work today which I ate most of around 2pm? Eggs and potatoes. Hmm. yummy tho. I was starving.
Dinner- I ate two ahi tacos (mostly raw actually) at the Chamber mixer. It's a tiny little Ahi taco made of a wonton crisped in the fryer shaped like a taco, inside it is filled with slaw and asian sauce mix that we make, and topped with raw Ahi tuna and topped again with Caviar!
Oh and had about 1/4 cup clam chowder. And a couple glasses of Donati Wine!
Came home and made a raw shake; Almond milk (the rest of it- gotta soak more tonite!) and a banana and spinach and blueberries, and some raw chocolate- Filled a tall glass and then some and I drank it ALL.
I was full but now I might have something more before I hit the hay. Hungry and sleepy.. need something a bit more heavy in the tummy, but I'll probably sleep better on an empty stomach. I usually do sleep better in that case.
Sleepy.
Hasta manana. <3

Internet down today!
From my cell phone:
Internet down today! Been doing decent. been HAPPY and feling real good. No joint pain, little swelling. maybe off my Alleve medicine soon. More later!
OK It's later now and I'm on the internet YAY!!
I have been feeling GOOD lately, not sure if it's due to hormones (I started...sssshhh!!!) Which brings me to another oddity; (Men, forego the remainder of this paragraph. Fair warning.) I am typically 23 days for the last uh, maybe .. year? ish? maybe less. but this month I was almost 30days! Whoa! That makes my husband happy anyway! He's been like HONEY when are you ever NOT on your period?? (are there men reading this? WTF are you doing here??)
So I made the most amazing nutmilk ever yesterday; I decided to take the skins off the soaked almonds before blending (easy as pie once they're soaked; it's just time consuming since it's one at a time) and I blended them up and it was like NIIICE and white and easy SUPER easy to strain. I even bought some super-fine mesh to strain the milk and it was STILL super easy to strain... I'm not going back to the old way again! AND I hear you can make stuff with the remaining pulp- I've saved mine from yesterday but I don't know what on earth to do with it... haven't had time to research it yet.
I've definitely been happier, feeling healthy, energy levels remain constant despite my major decline in animal meats. I have had the random bite of stuff here and there, since I cook for my family but I haven't had the major craving for cooked stuff. I don't want to risk tossing the raw thing out the window and getting to feeling bad again. I've made great progress so far and I'm stoked that my mind is quite set on the raw path, so much so that I don't ever contemplate making something other than my normal raw stuff. As long as I keep healthy stuff in my fridge to draw from, I think I'll be good...
Today; Cold cereal with nutmilk and a coffee made with nutmilk and raw chocolate with honey to sweeten
Lunch- Salad with spring greens, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, pine nuts, bee pollen (love that stuff!) some goat cheese (not raw) with the remainder of my raw dressing I made some time ago. Noticed a pronounced garlic flavor in it, and remembered that raw garlic will continue to strengthen in flavor and aroma over time. Use it sparingly unless you want to keep the boys at bay! ;-)

Funday Monday
Yes. I actually like Mondays.
You have to be my close personal friend in order to find out why.
On that note, I am working all day with my husband and running the store from open to close. So even getting out to grab a bite of something different is usually impossible.
Today I felt great- Although still waking up tired, I'm not waking up grumpy- just simply tired (nothing unusual here, I'd just prefer to hit the snooze button).
No breakfast- typical- but I did grab the last of my almond milk (pausing to toss a cup of almonds in water now for morning!) and had a coffee made for me at Joebellas. I would like to- and have- quit drinking coffee, I don't think it's good for you but it's such a routine for me that it's hard to give up. I'm fine with decaf as well, but then I drag about 3pm depending. I have heard that an apple will give you an equal and healthier jolt, and I've done that. And I think it works for the most part. Below is simply a picture of about a cup of Almonds in my huge Ball jar.
I am feeling fine, my hands and joints are feeling much better- I wish I could explain how my body felt previously; I have often referred to my pain as my body "yelling" at me... and I suppose the best way to explain it is the intense stress in my body- my muscles- just the intense tension is probably the biggest part of my pain, coupled with a feeling of swollen hands or muscles... like I needed to stretch and relax but it never worked. Very frustrating feeling that is uncontrollable. Going raw is the only thing that's ever helped me.
I am on meds for myself, as previously mentioned, and without them I feel like an old lady that has trouble getting up off the couch- my knees kill me and I'd rather be shot. With the meds, I consider myself 90% better, but as with anything else, that last 10% nags at you... and it does. It's NOTHING in comparison to being without my meds. When I went raw for a year, I felt 110% better. I didn't feel normal, I WAS normal. (ok wait- not that I'm "abnormal" LOL) but my doctor suggested I phase off my meds. THAT was a scary thought considering that my meds helped 90%! eek!! I never went entirely off the meds. Too chicken!!
This time, I am not stressing out about becoming absolutely 100% raw. I think my body would benefit greatly and I do believe the "hype" that the body, once it "realizes" that you're 100%, it begins to detox in a much more rapid fashion than if you're almost 100%. I personally believe that if you do it in spurts- say a couple weeks at a time of being raw vegan- and then have your animal protein (fish, chicken if you must) in moderation for a couple weeks, the body may respond best. But that's just my own opinion and assumption.
I have a great "Superfoods" book at my market that I've picked up today and am totally enamored with- Simple quick reading, quick reference and to the point. LOVE IT. I hope to throw some quick info out there daily on my twitter page (www.twitter.com/pier46seafood) and my facebook page (www.facebook.com/pier46sesafood) I don't usually put foodie stuff on my personal page, but here's the link www.facebook.com/jdegarimore
ANYWHOO......... I was craving calamari for some reason today, and I of course didn't eat it raw. I ate it FRIED. SHAME shame on me. It comes up out of the fryer automatically at the perfect time, and for some reason I decided to leave mine in for an extra 10 seconds. MISTAKE. overcooked. What was I thinking? Well, I didn't eat them all (a good thing) and I had a batch of Ahi Seaweed Salad with cucumber that I created earlier in the day.
I haven't eaten dinner yet. I bought some berries at the store and I kinda feel like a fruit plate of sorts... so I think I'll make something pretty with that!

Sunday
See? I didn't have time to blog yesterday and I forgot what I ate.
I'm sure I'll remember everything when I'm done with this entry. It's just how it goes.. ha.
I don't think I ate breakfast- I did coffee (forgot to bring my almond milk to work) so had a soy mocha at Joebellas.
Lunch- what the heck did I have? GAWD how could I forget? I feel like a bonehead.
I went out to dinner with family- celebrated a late Christmas with my "bonus-mom and dad" with a friend and my hubby & kids AT... Windows on the Water in Morro Bay. I ordered a salad to start with and a seared ahi tuna (don't I get enough fish?) and it came with some soba noodles which tasted just ok. The food presentation was gorgeous, but the taste was.... meh.. I had a taste of the husbands dinner and it seemed the same. It was disappointing but at least I stayed raw for the most part. I was happy I didn't order something cooked that ended up not tasting good. I mean ya know, if you're gonna blow your diet, do it WELL!
One thing I've noticed when being raw- and typically only when you're 100 percent raw- is that the flavors of your food EXPLODE in your mouth. Things start tasting so good- and on the other hand, if you eat something let's say with salt, it tastes way TOO salty. Food flavors are more pronounced on your tongue and your flavor pallete begins to change...
Anyways, got home late and hit the hay. It was fun having Christmas in January :-)

Happy Saturday!
Well.... I slept terrible. The room seemed hot during the night last night, and so I got up to crack the sliding glass door to the patio, which I have done for years- I LOVE fresh air when I sleep! Hopped back in bed, and of course started to hear flippin DOGS barking in the distance. Two dogs, back and forth, one further away than the other, the two obviously having some sort of discussion... You know how it goes, "maybe they'll stop in a minute" bark bark BARK bark BARK... blech... so I get up and shut the door, "so much for fresh air". I dreamed that I was in a hot air balloon and was stunned at the beautiful view. That was cool. Dreamt more but I don't recall now what it was. Usually when I dream, I don't sleep as well. not sure why.
Anyway, had a breakfast cereal with almond milk (Special K this time- not raw) and took my young coconut with me to work. My great big knife that I call my Hatchet is at work- it's the only one I can open coconuts with. So of course a couple staff members were checking it out and watched me open it and drink the water inside. One had a taste and said it tasted like the sweet milk at the bottom of the cereal bowl. Hm, maybe. I opened the empty container when I was done- split it in half with the hatchet- and scooped out the soft fleshy white meat inside.
Lunch consisted of leftover sushi rolls and sashimi- Ahi, Salmon, scallops, calamari salad (cooked) and some cucumber. Yummy and satisfying!
Dinner- Got home late due to having band practice tonite- I had an apple just prior to practice, and fresh figs- 3 I think- when I got home, and had about a 1/4 lb of turkey meatloaf from the other night with a couple slices worth of wheat bread baguette. I am wanting to incorporate some kind of cooked grain; preferably something like brown rice, maybe not so much a wheat item, but something to help keep things, uh... neverimind. :-)
More on that later.
Maybe.

Friday, January 8
FRIDAY-
Started the day with granola and nutmilk. Made a fresh batch of milk this am upon returning home from driving daughter to school. (soaked the nuts last night overnight) With the right equipment, I can get it done in under 5 minutes. I like that.
Today was Sushi Day at Pier 46- so I always end up with morsels here and there to eat, and of course the only cooked item in sushi rolls is the rice (exception would be California rolls). Someone once said that Brown rice sushi rolls are good (and no doubt much healthier) and I've always remembered that... I'd like to try making it sometime, maybe at home first.
Home now at 4pm, I think I will grab an apple and a Synergy drink (raw Kombucha juice- I have yet to learn all about it) http://www.synergydrinks.com but it's yummy and I know it's insanely more healthy than soda- which I never was a fan of anyways.
I haven't weighed myself lately- I'm not concerned about weight so much as I am getting toned up. I know I'm not in shape cardio or muscle-wise, and I need to do something in that department soon. I'm thinking about getting a video from Jillian on Biggest Loser... I'm sure she has some kick-my-ass video that yells at you or something. ha. Do I need that? Probably. I have noticed that when I go to the gym (rare) I do VERY well when I listen to my ipod or bring my earpods to plug into the TV's on the treadmill. it's astounding the difference it makes... kind of like Lamaze during childbirth; a great distraction from the pain.
Last time I weighed myself, I was around 145 and I'm 5'8" and wear size .. uh, 8 pants. Used to be six. Six is good for me.. I've been told to not get any slimmer than that. Hence the reason I don't weigh myself, it IS more about how the clothes fit and about how you FEEL inside that body. It's a God-given body and I don't think we should be trashing it the way we do.
Off to my hair appointment to shower my sensitive scalp with burning chemicals that will likely infiltrate my bloodstream. Ha. Couldn't resist. Sometimes I think raw fooding simply fights off all the other crap we do to our bodies.
So I came home wanting to make something new. I bought a Butternut squash the other day, of course forgetting completely what I had planned to do with it, so I simply googled "raw food butternut" and chose a youtube video of someone making raw soup. I went for it and tried it, following along like the proverbial wife in the kitchen doing exactly as the TV says, step by step, and thank God I had all the ingredients cuz I would have been hosed. (and no, they didn't list all the ingredients at the beginning. Annoying!) The husband videotaper was flapping the whole time the wife was trying to actually be a good Youtube chef. Anyway, enough of that. The soup is yummy and savory, I went easy on the spices since it's easier to add more rather than take away what you've already dumped in.... That's always fun... So, my vitamix overheated and stopped (just a safety thing- it will be fine in a minute) but it's perfect. I will add more spices next time and probably won't change anything else!
Here's the annoying youtube link in case anyone feels like watching what NOT to do...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BA4aRtm69sk
And below is the pic of finished product (makes like 4 times this amount)
Gotta run! Headed to 15c to hang with my hubby and friends!

Here's my entry for Thursday; I got home too late to write.
I was one tired puppy this morning.
I think it had alot to do with staying up til oh, 12:30 playing rockband2 with the hubby and friends!
No breakfast at home- I was on the run but I did grab an orange for later and brought almond milk to Joebellas Coffeshop and Joe tasted the remaining few tablespoons. "Mmm, that's a mild flavor" he said. And on to his other customers he went. Had the orange (SUPER juicy from Nature's Touch in Templeton) and later on in the afternoon I was hungry and decided on a Shrimp louie. 5oz bay shrimp and the dressing was the only thing not raw. OH and the hardboiled egg. I think eggs might be okay to add in, they're so gentle on the body- not like digesting a hunk of meat. Maybe I'll do scrambled eggs with avocado and tomatoes and cilantro & whatever sometime this week.
Dinner consisted of.. uh, I did snack on some fritos.. had to push them away! Is it the salt I like? I HAVE been learning more about salt lately.. anyway, I made a smoothie - here's the recipe
Blueberry Smoothie
Almond milk, handful of blueberries, loose handful of spinach and a banana. SOOO good!!
Definitely helps to have well-strained nutmilk. I have seemed to lost my nutmilk bags- I can't imagine where on earth they are!! Eh, they're cheap so I ordered more on ebay.
I could probably make them myself if I had time.
I gotta try and post THE DAY OF... because I've forgotten some humorous things that happened yesterday that I'd like to have posted. Of course I'll likely remember them all when I'm miles away from a computer. ha!

Wednesday, January 6
It seems pretty easy to stay raw (or mostly raw, whatever) so far. SO FAR being the magic words. I've learned that life can throw you for a loop and then you seem forced into "auto mode". My hope is to have enough basic raw food meals in my memory bank so that I can throw together a meal easily during crunch times.
Lately I've been remembering the old adage "You can't take care of others unless you take care of yourself". I sometimes feel like my world is consumed with taking care of others, and I do tend to put myself last in many situations. But when the stress gets too much, my body tells me- and I'm basically forced to make a change, Raw food being my first choice because I know it works- for ME.
A friend asked me to explain more of how the raw food makes me FEEL- as far as improvement goes.
Well, so far (how many days has it been? Hmm not many) I have seen definite improvement in my frame of mind- My stress level is lower- I am sleeping more soundly (something I noticed last time too). I noticed last time also that I definitely need LESS sleep- which became almost annoying last time but I don't recall why. I can see that my body is responding well so far, since I only took about an hour "cat nap" yesterday- the day that I took Anthony to the hospital. I basically got about 3 hours sleep max (one at night, and two after returning from hospital). I pretty much hopped out of bed and did a full day of work, a little teensy bit zombie-ish but stayed up til 10ish that night no sweat. I am trying to not give raw fooding the credit for every little positive thing- so, we'll see how things progress. Just no more hospital runs, please. Another thing I've noticed, is that my allergies completely go away when I'm raw- something the doctors have not been able to fix. I hated it!
One negative about being raw- I tend to be cold in the winter months. There is of course something comforting about warm foods in the winter, and I've heard that the living enzymes can still live up to 115 degrees. Those living enzymes is the ticket to health, so I'm thinking about heating up raw soups a bit. Or at least having hot tea at night for sure! Also- I'm watching my hands & joints; Having lupus, my joints can feel icky, and I've noticed it's pronounced when I eat beef! Weird.
Breakfast today- Mocha (steamed nut milk, espresso, raw chocolate, honey) and later a bowl of granola cereal w/ nutmilk. Closer to lunchtime actually!
Dinner- Bought some raw Cheddar cheese from Nature's Touch in Templeton and had those with chips .. OK FRITOS!! ha! Then I made a sushi-style roll with a blend of walnuts, soaked sunflower seeds, and various seasonings and whatnot.(see picture) I don't care for the recipe much so I won't post it - I don't want to post recipes if I wouldn't serve it to my best friends. :-) Main dish will be a salad of mixed spring greens w/ tomatoes and mushrooms, Avocado, pine nuts, shreds, bee pollen (Templeton farmers market) and blueberries and mango chunks. I made a great dressing yesterday and I will top it with that!
G'nite!

Today was nuts.
My son, in short, got food poisoning and was violently ill. I took him to the emergency room at 1am ish and left at 4:30am. Ghads. He's ok; they gave him shots to stop the nausea and gave him an IV bag of saline. And there we sat and waited.
I was thinking- among other things of course- how on earth I was going to handle getting up to take my daughter to school in the morning- should I just stay up? Should I sleep the two ish hours and hope I'm not driving while sleeping? Or hope my husband can take her? But he's been up waiting for my call all night.
So... I ended up hopping up at 6am like it was nothin'. As a matter of fact, I felt better this morning than I did yesterday morning. What the heck!?
Breakfast- Same as yesterday- cereal, mango, banana, nutmilk.
Lunch- an apple!
Picked at some fries at work, and dinner is leftover fish and brown rice and green beans & veggies. Hey, get home at 9pm and I consider that healthy fare.
Nite!

Monday, January 4
Mondays are a full day for me.. I was hoping to wake up in that "happy" mood or at least "happier", but it felt like I woke up at the crack of dark. Being the first day back to school for my 14yr old girl, we had to get our butts out of bed earlier than the last two weeks (glorious Christmas vacation) and I felt like a zombie this morning, worse than ever.
But there's always tomorrow!
I did actually "mess" with my daughter this morning- she tapped on the door to advise me she was ready, and I didn't answer her- hoping she'd think I slept in. (hee hee!) so I went to the door and cracked it open a *teensy* bit and responded in a sleepy voice... she didn't buy it.
Breakfast: Homemade almond milk with raw-looking "ish" cereal from the grocery store; OK it's prolly not TOTALLY raw but I think mostly. Tossed in some fresh banana and mango and finished it up with a cuppa joe from Joebellas. Not raw again but gimme a break. I need my routine... I should start bringing my Nutmilk in there like I've done a few times before. I love the fact that I can do that at Joebellas; I asked previously at a Starbucks and was promptly turned away. Ah well.
Lunch; Seared King salmon drizzled with rosemary and garlic infused olive oil. (toss chopped garlic and rosemary in your jar of olive oil. DONE.) On a bed of greens with our 98.9999 % raw Pear Dressing and a handful of random veggies and I was good to go til I got home at 9pm!
Dinner: Made a new recipe I found online; I posted it on the side of my blog wall. It's kind of a Mexican soup which has a spicy tomato base (think tomato soup on steroids) and you top it with toppings like chopped avocado, tomato, peppers, cilantro, etc. This is VERY much like "Taco Soup" which my mother makes.. a family favorite! I'll post the recipe. It's very good, tastes mexican and has a slight kick to it- I like it a lot! Now I need crackers or tortillas that I can make. I need a few more items to be able to dehydrate properly. I'm too cheap to buy them retail so I'm hangin for now...
One thing I noted tonight: my disposition seems to be turning upward (not that it is bad- I just deal with a lot of stress) however it could be hormonal possibly. I don't know and I don't care, but I will be taking note of whether it seems to be temporary or permanent as I continue trying to stay raw.

Remembering bits of my raw past
I remembered some random things today from times past;
1) a)If you're a new raw foodie, don't tell family members or close friends you're going raw unless you are confident you will have their support. I had more people give me a "you gotta be crazy" look if I discussed it with them. It was disheartening, especially considering that I wasn't doing it for fun.
b) don't EVER under any circumstances offer your food to anyone who is not raw unless they are clearly fishing for a bite. No matter how good it is to YOU, don't do it. Unless they're drooling over it, then... in that case, they just claimed the whole dish.
It simply seems that the best way to deal with it- at least for me- has been to simply shut up, do my thing, and if anyone happens to notice my better health and happiness, I wait for THEM to ask questions. It is then, and only then, that they're receptive to the information I give. Keep it simple, and let them draw you out instead of being a flood of information once they finally ask about it.
2) My teeth were way cleaner when I was 100% raw. Now I admit, I am a floss-aholic - I floss at least once a day. But when I was raw, I didn't FEEL like I needed to floss (my teeth still felt totally clean). I guess the lack of processed sugar and breads helped that. I know, because when I'm not raw, sugars and breads seem to make me want to brush just an hour or two later.
As far as my meals today, I had Starbucks soy mocha - Thanks, Highlands Church!
Lunch was a huge salad of spring greens with a new dressing which I loved, and I will post here. I topped the greens with avocado chunks, apple chunks, sprinkling of bee pollen, two figs quartered up, pine nuts, and chopped tomato.
The dressing Recipe:
Equal amounts of lemon / lime / orange juice
Fresh thyme (recipe called for dill- oh well)
Salt, 1/2 an avocado and emulsified it with flax seed oil. Love it!!
Although I did eat a cooked dish for dinner (pasta and turkey meatballs w/ sauce), I finished my night with a raw smoothie;
1 banana, 2 T raw chocolate, blend til smooth and add nut milk to desired consistency. I did about 16oz of milk, a perfect tasting thinner smoothie, just what I like. Yum. Hoping to wake up happy tomorow!
I will try to take pictures to post. Kinda makes it ALOT more interesting!

Giving it another go
Aah, with the holidays past, I am ready to give Raw Fooding another go. Unfortunately my body needs me to again; I feel it in many ways that I won't go into here.
My primary objection with this blog is to
a) Share with you and in the same fashion record for myself what odd things I'm eating / making;
b) record my body's symptoms and improvements:
c) inspire better health for whatever readers may follow.
MY SYMPTOMS:
I have Systemic Lupus, and I'm on meds for life although have been able to pare down with doctors suggestion. I finally found 100% relief after going Raw Vegan for a year- I felt better results after only a couple months being raw. (it's been years ago; don't quote me.)
My symptoms that I'd like to see relieved, from most to least important, are:
Joint pain
General skin and hair health (always had skin on the dry side)
General Disposition (I'm MUCH happier on Raw, it's scary!)
Waking up happy (literally. This is a HUGE perk of being raw for me!)
There are random other minor things that I hope to see improvement in too, but not important enough to list.
January 1st I made a hearty tomato sauce in the Vitamix with Tomatoes, olive oil, sundried tomatoes, basil, garlic, oregano, dates, salt and pepper. I blended the crap out of it til it was smooth & creamy. I shredded a zucchini with a citrus zester- yes, a zester! I had long strands of "spaghetti" with the tomato sauce, two helpings and went to bed feeling good.
Jan 2nd I woke up, had some raw Ahi Tuna that was leftover from New years Eve, with green onion and soy (nama shoyu). Not a great breakfast, but it was "There" and raw and fresh and actually super yummy. Loved the onion flavor that bursted in my mouth. Ate sushi rolls at work, (you know, the ends and stuff that aren't pretty enough to sell... SOMEBODY'S gotta eat 'em!) and came home later to make Almond milk out of almond butter (first try, suggested from www.rawpirategourmet.com) and it actually turned out GOOD!) I was thinking GREAT, this stuff is gonna turn out like drinking frickin' peanut butter flavored water, but it's NOT! Amazing. Had a bowl of raw-ish sorta kinda cereal with banana in it and the nut milk. I still like making my own. Hm. I should post recipes on the side. can I do it on the side? literally on the side of my blog page? heck idunno. I'm off. see you tomorrow. maybe.
